A Carillon Composition that Finds Beauty Amid Clamor

This installment of Sounds of Faith takes you inside the Chapel’s tower to hear a composition played on the bells of the J. Samuel Hammond Carillon. Joseph Fala, a Chapel carillonneur, describes techniques used in French composer Stefano Colletti’s “Sonatine” to give the piece a twentieth-century impressionist flavor.

“To my mind, ‘Sonatine’ conveys the sense of losing oneself in something exquisite in the midst of chaos,” Fala explains. “It’s the act of slowing down to find beauty amid clamor and bustle.”

Listen live to a carillon recital each weekday at 5:00 p.m. EDT on the Duke Chapel Facebook page.
