This service begins with a blessing of the palms as we remember the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, fulfilling an ancient prophecy of the coming Messiah. The palms on the altar reflect the fragility of the celebration—a mere five days later the crowd’s adulation will turn to hatred. Psalm 118 expresses thanksgiving and praise in celebration of the steadfast love of the Lord. The Gospel of Mark tells of Jesus riding on a donkey’s colt. In doing this, Jesus fulfills an ancient prophecy that proclaims him as Lord and Savior. Even on this day of celebration, the epistle lesson from Philippians emphasizes that Jesus’s exaltation comes through his obedience that leads to death on the cross. King Jesus receives his crown in hanging on the cross and being exalted by God.
