The Chapel is holding a Service of Advent Lessons and Carols this Thursday, December 9, at 7:00 p.m. Led musically by the Vespers Ensemble, the service includes organ music, scripture readings, prayers, anthems, and hymns.

The forerunner to this service originated in 1880 with E. W. Benson, bishop of Truro Cathedral in England. It was adapted in 1918 by Dean Eric Milner-White for use at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, England. In his preface to this new service, Milner-White wrote: “In the old English liturgies, the Advent Offices made a preparation for the coming of our Lord to this earth far more vivid and eager than those of our present Prayer Book. So an Advent Carol Service helps to express ‘the desire of all nations and ages.’”

Face masks are required to be worn inside of the Chapel. Learn more about the university's public health measures: https://returnto.duke.edu/public-health-measures/ .
