This service is on the first Sunday in the season of Lent. Throughout this season, we are invited to examine the roots of our Christian discipleship and identify with Jesus’s journey to the cross. The early Sundays are a wilderness time—an opportunity to go deep into our hearts and the souls of our communities, to recognize the horror and depth of our estrangement from God and to begin systematically to put things right. In the Gospel lesson from Mark, the Spirit leads Jesus into the desert following his baptism to be tested by Satan. After his forty days in the wilderness, Jesus returns proclaiming the good news of God’s kingdom that in him has come near. This morning we begin our service with a remembrance of those who were murdered in Durham in 2020. We join with our partners with the Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham in remembering those our community has lost through violence. Together we strive for a day when our community no longer experiences this kind of harm.
