The prophet Isaiah implores, “Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.” He offers words of comfort and hope to a people who are weary in exile, offering the promise that those “who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” In his first letter to the Corinthian church, Paul offers his example of becoming all things to all people for the sake of the Gospel. He does this to share the good news of Jesus with people in any circumstance of life, and he does it that he too may share in the hope of Christ’s good news. In Mark’s gospel, Jesus also represents hope and the chance for healing for all whose lives are twisted by illness, grief, and encounters with evil.
