Holy Week and Easter Online Services

We will celebrate Holy Week and Easter this year with these online services (click links for livestream and details):

All of the services will be presented via livestream on the Chapel website and also broadcast on the Duke Hospital television system channel 12.

Also part of our Holy Week celebration is a Sacred on Saturday online presentation on "The Greatest Story Ever Sung: A Short History of Passion Music" on Saturday, March 27, at 10:00 a.m. Learn more and register.

Also, during Holy Week, Duke students, staff, and faculty who are on campus can sign up for time in the Chapel during each weekday to meditate, reflect, pray, contemplate, or just be. See details and register.

Palm Sunday - March 28

11:00 a.m. Sunday Morning Worship Service

Sermon from Rev. Bruce Puckett, Assistant Dean of Duke University Chapel. Rev. Puckett is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene. He has been part of the Chapel Staff since 2012. Prior to joining the Chapel staff, he served as the interim pastor for the Congregation at Duke Chapel for two years. He has a master of divinity from Duke Divinity School, and a bachelor of arts in religion from Olivet Nazarene University. He has enjoyed working on the Chapel staff as the director of community ministry, the director of worship and community ministry, and now as the assistant dean of the Chapel. These various roles have enabled him to engage his passion for connecting people with God and with one another.

Sermon from Angela Cho, Staff Leader, Duke Asian Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Angela is a 2016 Duke Graduate who studied biomedical engineering and this is her fourth year as the campus minister for Duke Asian InterVarsity. Angela loves her work in walking with students in their college formation as they explore and wrestle through the intersection of faith, ethnicity, and justice.

Holy Wednesday - March 31

Sermon from Rev. Dr. David Hormenoo, Chaplain Services Staff, Duke University Hospital. Rev. Dr. Hormenoo is an ordained Baptist pastor from Ghana. He graduated from the Ghana Baptist Theological Seminary with a BTh degree and later from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, with degrees of MDiv with Biblical Languages, MA in Religious Education, and PhD in Pastoral Care and Counseling. He served as a professional chaplain, multicultural minister-in-residence and the coordinator of the Visiting Clergy Partnership Program at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He is certified as a ACPE Certified Educator by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, is a board-certified chaplain with the Association for Professional Chaplains, and is endorsed by Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Maundy Thursday - April 1

Sermon from Pastor Amanda Highben, campus minister for Duke Lutherans. Pastor Amanda was called to the Duke Lutherans community in June 2020. She was ordained in 2016 after twelve years in youth and family ministry. A graduate of John Carroll University (BA, English and Political Science), Luther Seminary (MA, Christian Education), and Trinity Lutheran Seminary (MDiv), she’s served diverse parishes in a variety of settings, including downtown Minneapolis, MN, inner-city Columbus, OH, and the college town of East Lansing, MI. During her three years at University Lutheran Church on the campus of Michigan State University, Pastor Amanda developed a graduate student and young adult ministry program and was an active member of the undergraduate campus ministry team.

 

7:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday Service

Sermon from Rev. Breana van Velzen, community minister at Duke Chapel. Rev. van Velzen is an ordained Baptist minister and holds a master of divinity from Duke Divinity School. She also holds a master of social work degree from UNC Chapel Hill and a bachelor of arts in English education from UNC Wilmington. Her passions include advocacy at the intersections of racial, economic, and environmental justice, and hospitality. These passions led her to work in faith-based advocacy, financial coaching, affordable housing, and immigration reform. When she is not volunteering or traveling, she enjoys slam poetry, science fiction, and nature walks. 

Good Friday - April 2

Sermon from Rev. Leslie Nambo, Chaplain Services Staff, Duke University Hospital. Rev. Nambo is an ACPE Certified Associate Educator & Senior Clinical Administrative Chaplain for Women's Services. Leslie earned her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago and her Masters in Divinity (M.Div.) from Duke University. Leslie is an ordained Elder within a Non-Denominational Christian community of faith and is endorsed by the Coalition of Spirit-Filled Churches. Leslie completed her internship, residency and Certified Educatory fellowship at Duke University Hospital where she served as chaplain for Pulmonology, the Heart Center and Psychiatry prior to her current position within Women’s Services.  Leslie is particularly interested in multi-cultural and multi-faith spiritual care and has served in various contexts domestically and abroad. She is herself bi-cultural and multi-lingual and brings an awareness of, and sensitivity to, the cultural implications of spiritual care to both individuals and institutions.

Dr. Powery is a national leader in the theological study of the art of preaching (homiletics), Powery regularly delivers sermons at Duke Chapel as well as at churches throughout the United States and abroad. He is often a keynote speaker and lecturer at educational institutions, conferences, symposia, and retreats. His teaching and research interests are located at the intersection of preaching, worship, pneumatology, and culture, particularly expressions of the African diaspora. Powery was ordained by the Progressive National Baptist Convention and has served in an ecumenical capacity in churches throughout Switzerland, Canada and the United States. He is a member of the Academy of Homiletics, for which he has served as Secretary; the American Academy of Religion; and the Society for the Study of Black Religion.
