Christ the King Sunday Service

Copied URL to clipboard

In our worship service this Sunday, November 21, at 11:00 a.m., we will mark the feast of Christ the King. It is a day for expressing the faith that, even though Christ was rejected and crucified, he rose and ascended, and forever reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit in glory.

The music in the service will reflect this theme, including the organ prelude, Orb and Sceptre by William Walton, that was written for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953. The title of the piece, taken from one of the speeches in William Shakespeare’s play Henry V, depicts Christ as an enthroned king, wielding the traditional royal orb and scepter in his hands.

The guest preacher for the service is the Rev. Dr. Christopher Beeley, the Jack and Barbara Bovender Professor of Theology, Anglican Studies, and Ministry at Duke Divinity School, as well as the director
of the school's Anglican Episcopal House of Studies. He will preach a sermon titled Who Rules Whom addressing the humbling and and empowering idea of Christ as the Ruler of all nations.
