Candlemas Service on Thursday with Music by William Byrd

Copied URL to clipboard

A Chapel service on Thursday, February 2, at 7:00 p.m. will celebrate the feast of the Presentation of our Lord in the Temple at Jerusalem—also called Candlemas, or The Purification of the Virgin Mary. The main music for the service will be William Byrd's "Mass for Four Voices," a sixteenth-century choral setting of the Mass.

The service has its origins in the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke, which includes a description of when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple according to Jewish law. There, the old prophet Simeon recognized the child as “a light for revelation to all nations.” Thus, the image of light is emphasized in the Candlemas liturgy, which begins in the entryway of the Chapel (the narthex) with the blessing of candles.

Paid parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis in the Bryan Center Garage at 125 Science Drive. ADA parking is available in surface lot at the same address.
