One of the long-standing traditions of Trinity College and Duke University is the observance of honoring the benefactors of the institution. The practice was formalized by the Board of Trustees on June 4, 1901, when October 3 was designated as Benefactors’ Day in honor of Washington Duke.
At Founders’ Day Convocation, students, faculty, staff and alumni from all schools come together in appreciation of the past and future of Duke University. The ceremony includes performances by members of the Duke Chapel Choir and Duke Chorale; recognition of outstanding students, faculty, and staff; and the presentations of the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award, and the University Medal.
This year’s convocation speaker is President of Paul Quinn College, Dr. Michael Joseph Sorrell.
Trustees Emeriti Sally Dalton Robinson and Dr. Thomas M. Gorrie will each receive the University Medal, Dr. Karin A. Shapiro will receive the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award, and Dr. Michael Joseph Sorrell will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award.
