Advent Lessons and Carols
7:00 pm
Advent Lessons and Carols
Location: Duke

Based on the formula made famous by the Christmas Lessons and Carols from King’s College, Cambridge, this service follows a similar pattern of readings, choral anthems, and congregational hymns. It begins in a darkened Chapel, with the choir singing and processing by candlelight. The service lasts about one hour. The music, led by the Chapel's Vespers Ensemble, includes settings by Palestrina, de Wert, Hassler, Manz, Britten, and Howells; stirring hymns for Advent include: "Comfort, comfort ye my people," "Hark! A thrilling voice is sounding," "Come, thou long-expected Jesus," "On Jordan’s Bank," and "Lo! He comes with clouds descending."

Paid parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis in the Bryan Center garage at 125 Science Drive. ADA parking is available in the Bryan Center Surface Lot at the same address.

Duke University recommends that anyone experiencing cold-like respiratory symptoms, even after a negative COVID test, continue to wear a mask indoors until symptoms resolve. Unvaccinated individuals, who are at increased risk for severe illness, are encouraged but will no longer be required to wear masks indoors.

A livestream of the service is available on the Duke Chapel YouTube channel. Also watch the service live on channel 12 of the Duke Hospital TV system or channel 110 of the Duke Campus Vision TV system.
