We welcome new singers into the Chapel Choir at any time of the year, though it’s easiest to join the Choir at the beginning of either semester (especially during the first two weeks of the fall semester). The Choir is open to anyone in the Duke and Triangle communities, with an emphasis on Duke students, faculty, and staff. We make every effort to accept students who are interested in singing and include as many community members as possible.
If you are interested in singing with the Chapel Choir, we’d love a chance to hear you sing beforehand, to make sure that you would succeed in the Choir. It’s easy to sign up for a time to come in and do that: just call 919-684-3898, or email the Chapel Music office.
These auditions are designed to be as relaxed and stress-free as possible. Just think of one short piece (or a relatively short section of a longer piece) that you’re very familiar with and feel really comfortable singing, like My Country ‘Tis of Thee, Amazing Grace, a Christmas carol, or something else you know. You can sing it when you come in, and we will supply a piano accompanist if you need it (just remember to bring an extra copy of the piece). In order to fill out some paperwork and have a chance to ask questions before your time to sing, we ask you to come a little before the pre-arranged time to the Chapel Music Office at 036 Westbrook Building, which is in the Divinity School, situated on the right side of Duke Chapel. During the first weeks of school, there will be signs showing you where to go.
Once you arrive at your audition, the Director of Chapel Music will warm you up before you sing your piece. We will also listen to how well you sing in tune and gauge how experienced you are with learning new music. It will take about 10 minutes.
Whether you plan come to the office and sing or are unsure whether or not you’d like to join the Chapel Choir, you are welcome to sing with the Chapel Choir in all rehearsals and services during the first two weeks of the semester (see below for details), either to join in the singing or just to listen. Bear in mind too that your singing in those first two weeks could demonstrate even better than your audition how much you are able to add to the Chapel Choir. We’ll let you know as soon as possible (typically by the end of the week in which you audition) whether we can give you a chance to sing regularly with the Chapel Choir.
