The scripture lessons in our worship service this Sunday, November 10, at 11:00 a.m. emphasize the theme of faithfulness. The lesson from 1 Kings tells of a widow who in a time of drought and famine gives of the little she has to provide for God’s prophet Elijah. Her faithfulness is rewarded by her food supply never running out. The writer of Hebrews recalls Jesus’s faithful self-sacrifice, once for all, for the removal of sins. In Mark, Jesus has harsh words for those religious leaders who enjoy the facade of faithful living without the cost of genuine obedience. Jesus then points to the virtue of a poor widow whose faithfulness is revealed in her giving a few copper coins despite her lack of resources.
