Formed in 1995, the Schola Cantorum is a flexible chamber choir comprising staff singers and volunteers auditioned from within the 100-voice Duke Chapel Choir.
The Schola presents concerts and sings for Sunday morning services and festival services at Duke Chapel, performing repertoire appropriate for chamber ensembles. Recent offerings have included Bach’s Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (BWV 61); Mary Lou Williams’ Black Christ of the Andes (St. Martin de Porres); a program of Black spirituals and German chorales for the Society for Christian Scholarship in Music; and a multi-faith concert commemorating September 11. In March 2025, the Schola performed for the national conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Dallas, Texas.
The Chapel Choir and Schola Cantorum are led by Dr. Zebulon Highben, director of Chapel Music.
