Prayer and Scripture Verses Offered in the Wake of Texas Mass Shooting

In the wake of the terrible mass-murder shooting yesterday at a school in Uvalde, Texas, we turn to these scripture verses and offer the following prayer:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” (John 1:5)

“The one who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20)

Lord God, light of the world, we are blinded by the darkness of another mass shooting. The lives of children and educators extinguished —in their place of presumed safety, in their space of work and learning, in their community—is more shadow and death than we care to bear. We feel the crush of a world broken by the harm we do to one another. Come, Lord Jesus, give us light. Come, Lord Jesus, give us hope. Come, Lord Jesus, and make us beacons of your light and hope in a world struggling to look to the future unafraid. Amen.
