Mission Trips

As designee of the Chapel Dean, the Religious Life Staff Mission Funding Committee is responsible for reviewing applications for religious life mission funds. Applications submitted on-time will be given a thorough review.

Criteria for a Mission Trip

All trips must meet at least one of the following

Be a sign of God’s love in the world by:

  • Sharing the Good News in word and/or deed
  • Establishing respectful relationships with the group or organization engaged by the mission.
  • Responding to human need and working to alleviate suffering

Funding Eligibility

  • Chapel recognized Religious Life group
  • Individual students with a reference from a Religious Life staff person. (Preference is given to undergraduates).
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the safety and well-being of the participating students
  • Compliance with liability requirements.

NOTE: A person who has applied for Duke Engage funding is not eligible to apply for Religious Life funding for the same project.  A complete list of participants and contact information for the trip leader must be provided to the director of Religious Life prior to departure.

Due Dates

  • Fall break trips: September 27, 2019
  • Winter break trips: November 1, 2019
  • Spring break trips: January 31, 2020
  • Summer break trips: March 20, 2020

 

Project description

Provide a complete description of the project including its goals and activities, with whom you will be working and what you plan to do. Relate your description to the criteria listed above. State why you want to be involved in this project.
Will this trip provide any direct service to others? If so, describe that.
Include a description of the program(s) or agency(ies) of sponsorship, including links to websites, if available. Describe the organization, its mission, with whom you will be working, and how you will prepare/train for the project. Describe the supervision involved.
Prior to the trip and the release of funds, the names of the participants and their year in school (first year, sophomore, etc.) must be submitted to the Office of Religious Life. No less than one month after the conclusion of the trip, a brief report with photographs must be submitted. Groups who fail to submit the requisite report will be ineligible for future funding. Submit all lists and reports to the Rev. Joshua Lazard, interim director of Religious Life via email: joshua.lazard@duke.edu.

If funding is approved, who will provide the names of participants and a reflection of the trip, including digital photos and other media files if available?

The reflection should address the question: How did this trip inform your faith and the faith of others on the team? The reflection and pictures needs to be submitted within one month of the project’s completion.
