Sunday Service with Rose Procession Honoring Murder Victims
Our worship service this Sunday, February 18, at 11:00 a.m. for the First Sunday in Lent will begin with a rose procession honoring and representing each of the forty-nine people who died as victims of murder in Durham in 2023. Representatives from the Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham and the Duke community will carry roses in remembrance for each person lost.
The Gospel reading recounts how, for forty days in the desert, Jesus is tempted by Satan and served by God’s angels. These forty days reflect the forty years of the previous wilderness journey for God’s people and is the origin for the forty days of Lent.
Note: Dr. Diana Butler Bass had previously been scheduled to preach at this service but is not able to attend; she is being rescheduled as a guest preacher for Fall 2024.
