
Meet the 2024–2025 PathWays Fellows
Peter Hansum

Peter Hansum is a Fulbright Scholar in the Master of Theology program at Duke Divinity School. He participated in a master of divinity in his home country of the Netherlands and holds a bachelor’s in theology from the University of Groningen. After graduation, Peter hopes to continue in the academic world by enrolling in a PhD program in the field of New Testament studies. During his time as a PathWays Fellow, he hopes to become more rooted in Durham's West End neighborhood and to immerse himself in the community of the PathWays house on Kent Street. Interested in the intersection of contemporary issues and biblical Scholarship, he hopes to find a way in which his studies and his life at the house can become mutually enriching.
Juan Pablo Parra

A dual-degree masters of public policy and MBA student at Duke University, Juan Pablo Parra is a strategist, policy enthusiast, and advocate for social impact. Originally from Colombia, he holds a bachelor's degree in business management and is pursuing concentrations in economic development policy, strategy, and finance. Juan Pablo has a diverse professional background, including experience in entrepreneurship, consulting, and social innovation. He has led initiatives to reduce fish waste, enhance educational outcomes for underrepresented students, and foster inclusive leadership. His current interests lie in climate and sustainability, public sector transformation, and economic development. He is an active member of the Duke community, serving as the co-president of both LIFE (Low-Income First-Generation Experience) and the Christian Business Fellowship at Fuqua. Juan Pablo also dreams of providing church consulting to improve their organizational structure and effectiveness. His vision is to bridge strategy and policy to drive meaningful change in public and private sectors alike.
Emily Phenice

Emily Phenice graduated from McNeese State University with a bachelor's in elementary education. She was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Before being accepted to Duke Divinity's Master of Divinity program, she worked as an elementary art teacher and then moved to Oxford, Mississippi, where she was an intern at Oxford University United Methodist. Emily is on track to become an Elder in the United Methodist Church upon graduation in the spring of 2027. She is hoping to go and work in camp ministry for the United Methodist Church. As a Pathways fellow, she is excited to learn more about the city of Durham and the nonprofit organizations within the community she is now a part of.
