The scripture lessons for this service carry a theme of promise and hope. Isaiah speaks tender words of comfort along with hope and promise that the Israelites’ time of suffering is over, and a new day is coming. The readings from Isaiah and Psalm 85 speak to that new day, when every valley shall be lifted up, the uneven ground made level, and righteousness shall prepare a pathway for the Lord. Mark’s gospel focuses on John the Baptist, who was sent to prepare the way for Jesus.
