Dean Powery on the Importance of Pauses in Speech and Life

Coming off of spring break, Chapel Dean Luke Powery writes about the importance of pauses—in speech and in life—in his latest column for the (Duke) Chronicle.

“One might think preachers are only talking heads, running their mouths all the time, but this isn’t the case,” he says in the column “A sacrament of pause.” “The first word in preaching or any oratorical act is silence because words come out of silence.”

“Pauses in public speech make room for divine breath, the Presence in the pause,” he says. “We pause to inhale divine life and exhale this life to others.”
