Dean Powery on the Connection Between Preaching and the Spirituals

Chapel Dean Luke Powery gave an address Friday, April 22, 2022, at the Symposium on Music and the Black Church at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. He discussed the connections between preaching and singing the spirituals.

“There’s always been this rich interplay of sung speech and spoken word that continues today in many Black preaching traditions,” he said.
