The readings between All Saints Sunday and the season of Advent turn our attention to God’s final judgment, and cause us to reflect on the crucial decisions that make up our own lives in light of this judgment. The Prophet Amos proclaims the coming day of the Lord that calls into question the people’s practices of worship, festivals, and assemblies. The offerings, songs, and sacrifices of the people are not what the Lord desires. What God wants is for “justice to roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever flowing stream.” Paul declares a hopeful message to Christ’s followers in Thessalonica about Jesus’s return, where the dead in Christ will rise and be met by those who remain as Christ gathers his people to be with him forever. The Gospel of Matthew recounts the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. In this parable, half of the bridesmaids had chosen wisely to bring extra oil for their lamps, and the other half did not.
