Luke Powery and his book "Becoming Human"
Join Duke alumni this summer in reading Chapel Dean Luke Powery's Becoming Human: The Holy Spirit and the Rhetoric of Race. The book has been selected for the Duke Reads Summer 2023 program, which includes an introductory video from Dean Powery and questions to consider while reading.
In Becoming Human, Dean Powery contrasts a view of humanity that sees race as essential and valuing some bodies over others with a theological understanding of humanity, shaped by the biblical account of Pentecost, that sees the diversity of human bodies as one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Dean Powery is also a professor of homiletics at Duke Divinity School and has a faculty appointment in the Department of African and African American Studies.
