Duke University benefactor James B. Duke wrote in his indenture for the university, “I advise that the courses at this institution be arranged … with special reference to the training of preachers, teachers, lawyers and physicians, because these are most in the public eye, and by precept and example can do most to uplift mankind.” More recently, the Board of Trustees issued a new statement of the aims for university that includes a reference to faith and learning at Duke: “Recognizing its origin in this tradition, its continuing relationship to The United Methodist Church, and the diverse constituency that has developed since its founding, the University is committed to creating a rigorous scholarly community characterized by generous hospitality toward diverse religious and cultural traditions.”

The discussion will address various ways faith contributes to the life and purposes of a research university, inside and outside the classroom, whether it be in the fields of business, divinity, medicine, or arts and sciences.

Participating in the panel will be:

  • Dr. Valerie Ashby, dean of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences
  • Dr. William Boulding, dean of the Fuqua School of Business
  • Dr. Mary Klotman, chair of Department of Medicine, appointed as next dean of the School of Medicine
  • The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery, dean of Duke University Chapel

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Don Taylor, a professor in the Sanford School of Public Policy and chair-elect of the Academic Council. Audiences members will have an opportunity to ask questions and the event will be streamed live on the Chapel's YouTube channel.
