Paul Hindemith: When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom'd (A Requiem for Those We Love)

Join the Choral Society of Durham for a rare performance of Walt Whitman’s poetic elegy for Abraham Lincoln, set to music in 1946 by the German composer (and newly naturalized American citizen) Paul Hindemith. Commissioned as a memorial to Franklin Roosevelt, the piece is scored for mezzo-soprano and baritone soloists, mixed chorus, and full orchestra. Just as Whitman’s poem mourns the Civil War dead along with the assassinated president, Hindemith’s composition mourns not only F.D.R., but the dead of World War II.
