Cantata 147, Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben ("Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life") contains one of Bach's most celebrated chorales, known in English as "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." It was one of the earliest cantatas he composed at the start of his time as Cantor of St. Thomas's Church, Leipzig.
Johann Sebastian Bach's church cantatas are often considered the pinnacle of German sacred music, works whose theological depth and emotional resonance touch deep places in the human soul. The Bach Cantata Series presents these musical masterpieces accompanied by other notable choral and instrumental works of the Baroque era. This concert will feature: "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben," BWV 147 and "Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ," BWV 116
