Duke Chapel's annual Holy Saturday concert given by the Vespers Ensemble consists of just one work: Arvo Pärt's "Passio" for soloists, choir, and instrumental ensemble. Admission is free.
The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is one of several contemporary composers who have turned to the powerful genre of the Passion narrative. Pärt's 1982 setting is hailed as a masterpiece of late twentieth century choral works. His setting is austere, and highly objective. It employs modest forces: Jesus and Pilate are sung by soloists, the Evangelist by a solo quartet, accompanied by a small chorus and ensemble of five instruments. Although there is little overt word painting, the listener's attention is first held, then gripped by the harrowing unfolding of the Passion story from the Gospel of John.
Sung in Latin, and lasting seventy-five minutes without a break, the austere, cloistered nature of this music is not recommended for younger listeners; families with younger members may like to attend the rehearsal in Goodson Chapel on the day of the concert anytime between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
