Art Exhibit: Membra Jesu Nostri, by Robyn Sand Anderson
Location: Duke Chapel
On April 21 at 4:00 p.m., the Duke Vespers Ensemble will present a vivid musical oratorio by Dietrich Buxtehude dedicated to "the suffering limbs of our Lord Jesus." To enhance the impact of this wonderful piece of music, we have commissioned an artist to create one new painting for each movement of the oratorio, which each correlate to one limb of Christ's body: the feet, knees, hands, sides, breast, heart, and face. The co-mingling of old art (the music and texts) and new art (the paintings) is extremely moving and reaches a deep part of our human spirit that neither of these art forms reaches on its own. The paintings will be on display in the Chapel starting on Thursday, April 18. The artist will be available at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, to visit with people prior to the concert.
