Vocal Arts Ensemble Father’s Day Concert: “The Road Home”
On this Father’s Day, our music offers expressions of love, care, and protection, both within the family and in the sacred realm. Music by composers and their fathers—in the Christiansen and Bach families—represents the flowing of one generation to the next. In addition, the men of VAE will sing Eric William Barnum’s beautiful setting of the Robert Burns poem “A red, red rose.”
Much of this music was written as a personal response to events in composers’ lives. Philip Stopford wrote “Do not be afraid” for the baptism of the daughter of friends, whereas Bach’s similarly-titled piece, “Fürchte Dich Nicht (Do not be afraid),” was written for the funeral of the wife of a public official in Leipzig. Billy Joel’s poignant “Goodnight, my angel” is a response to his daughter’s question about where we go when we die.
We feel that this is all beautiful and expressive music, and we hope that it will be enjoyable and meaningful for everyone: fathers, mothers, and children!
