Three Arguments for the Dependence of Morality and Human Dignity upon Religion

Speaker

Dr. John Hare, Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology at Yale University

In his paper titled, "Three Arguments for the Dependence of Morality and Human Dignity upon Religion," Hare argues that we depend on Providence for the belief that morality is consistent with happiness, Grace for the belief that we can be morally good given our propensity for evil, and Justification as a reason not based on self-interest for why we should be morally good and, in particular, respect human dignity. The lecture will take place on Thursday, September 26 at 7:00pm in the Biological Sciences Building, Room 111. The building is directly across the street from the Byran Center parking deck.
