National Lutheran Choir Concert: My Song As I Journey

Speaker

National Lutheran Choir

Take a journey with the National Lutheran Choir. This concert presents music from the Lutheran canon and works that explore the common struggle through life’s journeys, both those chosen and those forced upon us. When the road gets long and our legs get heavy, we share the stories of those who have gone before us and pave the way for those who will come after. Works from the Lutheran choral tradition by composers such as Heinrich Schutz, Knut Nystedt, and F. Melius Christiansen stand side by side with diverse selections from Florence Price, Stacey Gibbs, Alice Parker, Zanaida Robles, and others which highlight the stories of enslaved Africans, immigrants, and refugees in the United States.

Under the direction of Dr. Jennaya Robison, the National Lutheran Choir's artistry is rooted in its mission to celebrate, invigorate, and expand the heritage of sacred choral music through the highest standards of performance and literature. Founded by Dr. Larry Fleming in 1986 and led by artistic director Dr. David Cherwien from 2002-2023, the National Lutheran Choir sings a spiritual story through diverse repertoire-from early chant and simple folk anthems to complex choral masterworks and new compositions. A past recipient of both the Margaret Hillis Award and the Dale Warland Singers Commissioning Award from Chorus America, the National Lutheran Choir has been recognized for its extensive discography, its artfully produced digital content, and its frequent commissions of new music.
