Duke Chapel is among the co-sponsors of this Juneteenth interfaith prayer service organized by the Divinity School's Office of Black Church Studies. It includes prayer, libations, and live music. It is followed by a cookout at 4:00 p.m. at Penn Pavilion.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The term comes from June 19, 1865, when enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas, found out that they were free a full two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation became official.
