Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom Cookout [Penn Pavilion]

Duke Chapel is among the co-sponsors of this Juneteenth celebration of freedom cookout, organized by the Divinity School's Office of Black Church Studies. It includes food, music, and family-friendly fun. It is preceded by a prayer service at 1:00 p.m. in Goodson Chapel. To attend the cookout, please RSVP here.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The term comes from June 19, 1865, when enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas, found out that they were free a full two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation became official.
