Galuppi Quartet: "The Seven Last Words of Christ" by Joseph Haydn

The Galuppi Quartet (Gabriel Richard, Jean-Christophe Marcq, Gilles Deliege, and Elsa Benabdallah) and the French composer Olivier Dejours will visit Duke for the performance on an original composition on the "Seven Last Words of Christ" by Joseph Haydn. The performance offers the worldwide premier of an original work intertwining ancient music, contemporary music, and an unpublished essay by philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy. This composition explores the innovative genre of the musical palimpsest, while proposing a new kind of melodrama that investigates the role of the voice in musical composition throughout the ages. The performance is an important component of a wider project on music and philosophy that consists of a symposium on contemporary philosophy and music and a videoconference with Jean-Luc Nancy. It will launch this series of events and offer a platform for reflections on the contemporary interactions between music and philosophy. The performance is organized by the Department of Romance Studies and will take place on Tuesday, January 29, at 8:00 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel (inside Duke University Chapel).
