Choral Vespers

In honor of Veteran's Day, this Choral Vespers service features music of reflection and remembrance. The pieces includes: an excerpt from Jacobus de Kerle's Requiem, Thomas Campion's "Never weather-beaten Sail,” "Peace, perfect Peace" to music of Orlando Gibbons, Francisco de Peñalosa's funerary motet "Versa est in luctum,” and and Josquin Desprez's setting of the Nunc Dimittis. The service concludes with Douglas Guest's "For the Fallen," a poignant setting of Laurence Binyon's Remembrance Day poem from 1914:
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them. We will remember them.

For thirty-five years, Choral Vespers has been a way to end the busy work day with scripture, prayer, and sacred music. The service is led by Chapel and local ministers with music from the Duke Vespers Ensemble.
