Celebration of Preaching: Many Voices, One Gospel

This day of events celebrates the Christian preaching tradition while acknowledging the creative tension in many voices seeking to proclaim one Gospel.

The featured preacher in the closing worship service will be the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago and author of Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World: Finding Hope in an Age of Despair and other works. Dr. Moss has built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism, preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality.

• The Rev. Dr. William Turner, Jr., James T. and Alice Mead Cleland Professor of the Practice of Preaching at Duke Divinity School
• Bishop William Willimon, bishop in the United Methodist Church, former dean of Duke Chapel, and professor of the practice of Christian ministry at Duke Divinity School

2:30 p.m.—(Teaching) Preaching Today
A public discussion based on the new book Ways of the Word: Learning to Preach for Your Time and Place, featuring:

• The Rev. Dr. Sally A. Brown, the Elizabeth M. Engle Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship at Princeton Theological Seminary, and co-author of Ways of the Word
• Dr. Charles Campbell, professor of homiletics at Duke Divinity School
• Dr. M. Brandon McCormack, assistant professor of pan-African studies at University of Louisville
• The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery, dean of Duke University Chapel and co-author of Ways of the Word
  

The moderator will be the Rev. Dr. Lauren Winner, associate professor of Christian spirituality at Duke Divinity School.

A session featuring performances by local spoken-word artists.

A special Vespers worship service featuring guest preacher Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago and author of Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World: Finding Hope in an Age of Despair, in addition to music from:

• The Duke Vespers Ensemble, a chamber ensemble focused on the performance of Renaissance polyphony and related genres
• United in Praise, a Duke student Gospel choir and praise dance ministry
