Dean Powery on Daring to Dream

Writing in the (Duke) Chronicle, Chapel Dean Luke A. Powery says that dreams can allow us to imagine "the ‘oughtness’ of life that transcends the ‘isness’ of reality."

Citing Joseph in the Book of Genesis, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the theologian Howard Thurman, Dean Powery says dreams can disrupt the status quo and put the dreamer in danger. Even so, he say, "We dream because to dream is to live and not to dream is to die."

"Dare to dream although dreams are not always welcomed," he writes. "By dreaming, you may have to risk your life, or risk the way life is, but to dream is to live, so keep alive the dream in your heart."
