This season, our Bach Cantata performances follow Johann Sebastian Bach’s career and creative process from his early days in Arnstadt, Mühlhausen, and Weimar, thence to Cöthen, and finally, Leipzig. The first concert in the series will be Sunday, September 15, at 5:00 p.m. There is no charge for admission. With the theme of "Arnstadt & Mühlhausen," the concert features these cantatas:

  • Cantata 131  Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir / From the depths I cry to thee
  • Cantata 150: Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich / My heart longs for thee
  • Cantata 106: Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit / God's time is best

Learn more about the music by attending a pre-concert conversation at 4:00 p.m. in Goodson Chapel in the Divinity School's Westbrook Building. Dr. Roseen Giles, an assistant professor of music at Duke, will speak on "Death and Dying in Bach's Early Cantatas." Those attending the talk will have seats held for them at the concert.

Families with young children, or those unable to attend the concert, are welcome to sit in on a dress rehearsal the day before the performance (Saturday, September 14) between 3:30 and 6:00 p.m.
